Introduction

Learning is the key to personal growth and transformation.

Personal development is about engaging in an intentional process of creating a more fulfilling life and pushing yourself to reach your highest potential.

Learning plays a key role in this transformative process, because by exposing yourself to new ideas, new concepts, you challenge your brain and are pushed to think more innovatively. You are triggered to ask yourself what you know, what you don't know, who you are and what your beliefs are. You also gain knowledge and understanding of the skills, habits or mindset you need to develop to thrive mentally, socially, spiritually, emotionally or physically.

But how do you find the inspiration to take action on personal development? How do you know what changes are needed and how to make them to create a better version of yourself?

There are so many self-help books, podcasts, blogs... that this search can quickly become overwhelming.

That's why I created this series, to share with you my list of spiritual teachers who, throughout my life, have helped me connect to the truth of who I was and led me on the path to spiritual awakening.

But first, let me tell you a story.

It is in fact a movie, called "The Village", directed by M. Night Shyamalan and released in 2004.

It is the story of a small isolated village in Pennsylvania in the 19th century. The inhabitants live in seclusion, fearing the monsters that inhabit the surrounding woods. They have built a large fence to protect the village and the villagers are not allowed to cross it.

I'll skip to the end (spoiler alert): A young girl is allowed to cross the forest to get medicine for an injured village boy. Not only does she survive, but at the edge of the woods, she meets a ranger driving a patrol car and discovers that she is actually living in the 21st century, not the 19th!

It is revealed that the creatures were community members in disguise to scare and prevent others from trying to leave. We also learn that the village is set in a nature preserve purchased by a very wealthy man who created this place with his family's fortune and recruited people to join him to live in this community protected from any aspect of the outside world.

The film did not receive very good reviews, especially because of its disappointing ending. Some saw it as a metaphor for monsters as the responsibility of parents to protect their loved ones from the threat of modern society.

This film struck me as a modern tale of escape and growth. The heroine's journey of understanding is at the heart of the film, and I totally identified with it.

At some point in my life, I had to go beyond what my parents, education, family and friends had taught me. I realized how much the culture I lived in shaped my belief systems, my truths, my identity, and what I envisioned was possible or not. I wasn't unhappy and always considered myself a privileged person, raised in a loving and supportive family. But I wanted more. I didn't want to live in the certainty of a ready-made path and become what was expected of me.

Deep down, I felt that to be truly happy, I had to walk through that gate and discover what lay beyond that familiar and protective environment. I realized that growth only happens outside of our comfort zone, and that if I wanted a life with purpose, I had to go beyond the limitations I had imposed on myself or those imposed by society or family.

And what a fascinating journey it has been! Each step has been a learning experience, about myself, about others, and as I continue to walk, I realize how much I still have to learn!

I have met many different and amazing people, who have helped me when I was lost in the forest, making my way through the trees or giving me directions on where I was, or where a certain path was going, so that I would know if I was going the right way.

Throughout my journey, I have been fortunate to find guides who have helped me discover my own path to self-realization.

Today, it’s my turn.

I'm here, knocking on the door gate of your comfort zone to invite you to embark on this beautiful journey. I know it can be scary to decide to step into the unknown, but I've got your back! I've enlisted the help of my best spiritual guides who, as they did for me, will help you find your own way to your inner self.

Your mental world doesn’t have to be limited to your own village! Let's open the door gate!

My first spiritual teacher- Louise Hay

I discovered Louise Hay's work through the book "You can heal your life".

Her key message in that book was, "If we are willing to do the mental work, almost anything can be healed”.

When she was about 50 years old, she was diagnosed with cancer. She believed that she had contributed to the disease herself by cultivating resentment about the sexual abuse she had suffered as a child. She believed that negative thoughts lead to illnesses.

She also believed that positive thinking could change a person's situation.

So she began therapy that included affirmations to get rid of those memories of sexual abuse in her mind and body. She survived her cancer. She was convinced that healing the emotional components of an illness also heals the physical conditions.

For me, this was the first time I was exposed to the mind-body connection. I found it very stimulating to learn that diseases of the body actually have their root causes in our minds, in our thinking, in what we believe about ourselves and the world around us.

Empowering because if our external circumstances are the manifestation of our state of mind, this means that by changing our thoughts, we can change our experiences.

"Remember that you have been criticizing yourself for years and it hasn't worked. Try approving yourself and see what happens". - Louise Hay

Your life becomes what you believe

The thoughts we have, if we repeat them over and over, become beliefs. Since human nature tends to always want to be right, we will interpret everything that happens to us through these lenses, making sure that we only encounter evidence in our environment that reinforces these beliefs we hold to be true.

And this process is self-reinforcing: since we only retain from our environment what is consistent with our beliefs, guess what? We think we were damn right to believe it, because it happened the way we thought it would!

In short, the more we think about something, the more it manifests itself in our lives.

How to get out of this self-perpetuating cycle?

Since our thoughts become our reality, all we have to do is become aware of our thoughts and consciously change them. Our self-limiting beliefs are fueled by our limiting thoughts. So why not have powerful, energizing and empowering thoughts?

By consciously choosing to change our thoughts and replace them with positive ones, we begin to create what we really want to manifest in our lives.

In fact, by replacing our thoughts with positive affirmations, we are reprogramming an existing negative belief. Engaging in a conscious process of changing our thoughts and self-limiting beliefs can have a positive impact on our lives.

So make the conscious choice to change your story, to empower yourself and become the creator of the life you most desire.

Here is my shortlist of the most powerful affirmations by Louise Hay

  1. Life brings me only good experiences.
  2. I love and approve of myself.
  3. Life supports me in every possible way.
  4. I deserve the best, and I accept it now.
  5. Wellness is the natural state of my body. I am in perfect health.
  6. I flow easily with new experiences, new challenges, and new people who enter my life.
  7. I am good enough just as I am.
  8. Everything I need comes to me at the perfect time.
  9. I am open to new and wonderful changes.
  10.  I am in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing.

Conclusion

Our experiences are the external consequences of our thoughts. By consciously doing positive affirmations, we can change our mindset.

Affirmations are a powerful life-changing tool: they help us to positively change our thinking, elevate our emotions, enabling us to modify our behavior and re-evaluate our beliefs.

They are the keys that open the doors to your village: When you practice them, you begin to create something new in your life and free yourself from your usual way of looking at life.

This does not happen overnight.  You must be constantly aware of your thought patterns and make a conscious choice - day in and day out - to replace any negative, limiting thought with a positive, supportive and loving thought.

Once you make a habit of doing this, you will begin to see a path - one you never imagined existed - emerging in the forest and waiting for you to take it.
