Reiki is an energy healing technique in which a practitioner gently places their hands on different parts of the patient’s body to help remove energy blockages, thus improving the flow and balance of energy to promote relaxation, stress reduction and facilitate healing.
Imagine you have just got on the highway. Traffic is fluid. This traffic symbolizes the energy circulating through the body.
Then at the same time, a large number of cars enter the highway resulting in a traffic jam.
Traffic is now in slow motion. The more cars use the highway, the bigger the congestion becomes and the less fluid the traffic becomes.
This pile-up of vehicles represents your emotions (any fear, anger, attachment...) which prevent the free flow of energy in your body and thus cause the appearance of pain.
“There are two ways to live: you can live as if nothing is a miracle; you can live as if everything is a miracle.”
- Albert Einstein -
The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words:
- Rei: which means “universal, spirit, wisdom”
- Ki: which means “life force”
Reiki can thus be translated as "universal life force energy".
”One word frees us of all the weight and pain of life: that word is love.”
- Sophocles -
The founder of Reiki is Mikao Usui.
He was a Buddhist monk (1865-1926) who traveled extensively and acquired knowledge in different fields such as medicine, religion or psychology.
He discovered Reiki after a 21-day fast and meditation retreat on Mount Kurama,
In 1922, he created in Japan the “Usui Reiki Ryoho Gokkai” or Usui Reiki Healing Method Learning Society, in order to teach Reiki.
His teaching was based on the following 5 precepts:
Just for today, I will not be angry.
Just for today, I will not worry.
Just for today, I will be grateful.
Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.
For Mikao Usui, healing can only come through the decision to become responsible for our own health. We must accept responsibility for our healing and take an active part in it. Indeed, according to him, the root causes of suffering are within ourselves.
To find these root causes and for healing to happen, it first requires a profound change in attitude because negative thoughts and feelings cause a disruption in the flow of life force. Being angry towards either ourselves or others around us creates negative energy blocks. Worry can lead to more severe conditions such as anxiety and panic related disorders.
On the other hand, by counting our blessings we begin to realize that we are truly abundant. This generates positive thoughts and energy that radiates out to the universe. By the law of attraction, this will invite more blessings to come into our lives. Being supportive and honest empowers us with positive feelings, filling us with feelings of joy and happiness.
Chujiro Hayashi was a student of Mikao Usui. He left the school in 1931 to found his own private clinic. He made significant changes to the original teachings of Mikao Usui. These were later used as a basis for the diffusion of Reiki in the West.
Hawayo Takata, who was visiting Japan from Hawaii at that time, learnt Reiki from him and took it to America.Back in Hawaii, she opened the first Western private Reiki clinic, also changing the teachings received by Chujiro Hayashi to adapt them to American culture.
After her death, the Masters she as trained created the “Reiki Alliance” to establish standards of practice and teaching. The practice of Reiki began to grow quickly and spread all over the world.
From the 1990s onward, many practitioners left this movement to become independent and found new branches of Reiki.
Recently, original Reiki manuscripts have been discovered in Japan so that techniques from traditional Reiki are now being introduced in Western Reiki.
In Japan Usui Reiki Ryoho Gokkai still exists but remains a very closed circle that does not accept foreign members. The traditional practitioners are still reluctant to disseminate Reiki teachings, which they considered sacred. It is thus difficult to learn more about traditional teaching, as it is still practiced in Japan today.
Nevertheless, over the last few years, Western Reiki was introduced in Japan, and, from now on, many schools have teaching techniques from the two systems.

We are composed of 3 elements: a body (from an anatomical point of view), a mind (thoughts, feelings) and energy (one can feel “down” or experience moments when “one's battery is flat”).
Energy establishes the link between body and mind and must flow freely to every cell, tissue, and organ to feed and nourish them.
If the flow of energy is disrupted, the physical organs and tissues will be affected. Therefore, a disruption in the flow of energy is the main cause of illness. When Ki is high, a person will feel good and will be less likely to become ill.
This life force energy is the primary energy behind our thoughts and feelings and is responsive to them. If we have positive thoughts, our flow of Ki increases, and we feel better. All negative or disharmonious thoughts or feelings will cause a disruption in the flow of Ki. The physical organs that exist at these locations will hence be restricted in their functioning.
If the negative thoughts and feelings are not eliminated quickly, illness will result.
Even Western medicine recognizes that a large part of illness is caused directly or indirectly by the mind.
Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy.
It raises the vibratory level of the energy field where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached. This causes the negative energy to break apart and fall away.
As this happens, the unhealthy physical organs and tissues become properly nourished with Ki and start to work in a balanced healthy way again thus replacing illness with health.
You may or may not have control over the events in your life but you can control how to respond to them.
There are positive and negative aspects to every situation, even the ones that appear to be very horrible. It is up to us to find the positive and focus on that part of the equation. Your perception of any circumstance or situation will be your reality.
Imagine you have a serious accident. You can choose to see that event as something terrible to which you will respond accordingly. Or, you can choose to see that event as an inspiration to make something more of your life.
The way that you interpret your life experience creates your identity.
These perceptions of life make you the person you believe you are and you then act like the person your perceptions have created. Your reality is shaped and interpreted according to your beliefs. Your perception of people and events creates a pattern of energy that conditions those people or events to be what you expect them to be.
By choosing to change your beliefs structure, you will change how you see and perceive things, people, places…
Reiki will enable you to become aware of your thought process and will help in the process of transforming the mind from a negative state to a positive one. You can then begin to attract higher vibrations into your perception, changing your reality.
As you change your point of view and get used to seeing a different reality in your mind, you will begin to see a corresponding change in your daily life, your new inner reality manifesting in your outer reality.
We often have to repress feelings such as anger or jealousy, because they are not socially acceptable behaviors.
These unwanted feelings accumulate in the unconscious mind, where they grow and continue to affect our behavior and influence our experiences, creating the “Shadow self”.
Because it is composed of our unwanted characteristics, the shadow self is responsible for attracting our negative experiences.
This means that if we have negative feelings about someone, it is our Shadow Self that has attracted him/her to us and caused us to feel the way we do towards him/her. It is even likely that the characteristics of this unwanted person that we dislike the most are characteristics of our Shadow Self and we have these similar traits within us.
With Reiki, it becomes possible to prevent ourselves from directing our negative feelings towards the person in front of us, and turn our attention inwardly to search for any characteristic we dislike so much in the other person. It is a step in the direction of healing and of changing our inner world.
By paying attention to the Shadow Self and accepting it as part of ourselves, a process of inner discovery and healing becomes possible. Once the Shadow Self begins to be accepted and the healing process starts, it is much easier to accept the other as well, making it easier to find solutions and resolve issues.
"When I changed the way I looked at things, the things I looked at changed”

The session starts with a short briefing in order to define your request and identify your needs.
I will briefly show you the hands positions that I will be using. You remove your shoes, you lay down with your clothes on, you close your eyes...and you relax!
The session begins. The hands-on treatment lasts approximately 45 minutes.
I will place my hands lightly touching the head, shoulders, torso, stomach, knees, and feet. Additional placements in specific areas can be done as needed. This is never intrusive and you will begin to feel very relaxed as you allow the energy to flow to the areas where it is most needed by your body.
When the treatment is over, you get up slowly, rest a few minutes and drink some water to flush away toxins in the system. We then have a short debriefing.
Reiki is recommended for ongoing health maintenance since it promotes strong health and prevents illness.
One session every 10 to 15 days would be ideal to feel all its benefits.
However, I would encourage you to receive the first 3 sessions relatively closed together to open up and begin balancing your energy system.
You can then decide for yourself what benefits you are receiving from Reiki and we will discuss how best to space the sessions to suit your needs and your schedule.
As the Reiki energy encourages you to let go of all tension, anxiety, fear, or other negative feelings, a state of peace and well-being is experienced.
A variety of sensations may also be felt (tingling, itching, energy moving internally, sensations of heat or cold, emotional release...)
In addition, some may feel a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and surrounds them. Others drift off to sleep or report floating outside their bodies or have visions.
What one experiences during a Reiki treatment varies from person to person and each treatment will be different.
Reiki stimulates your natural healing ability and this may result in the clearings becoming apparent. Some report a worsening of their condition or the reappearance of a past illness. Runny nose, colds, diarrhea, stomach ache, aches and pains, headache, fatigue for a day or so can also be experienced.
Not everyone will present these symptoms. If you experience them, you have to understand that this is not considered negative reactions, but instead the body’s way of letting go of the energetic toxins that were blocking its most effective functioning.
Once the toxins are released and the body adjusts to renewed health, you will feel better. Some people report having difficulty with others, or feeling anger or sadness. Allow yourself to explore these things. When you feel these changes occurring, recognize them and let the process unfold.
Remember if you do experience uncomfortable feelings during the course of your treatment, it is because you are healing.
“Healing may not be so much about getting better, as about letting go of everything that isn't you - all of the expectations, all of the beliefs - and becoming who you are.”
- Rachel Naomi Remen -
